Seela suwa arana: A haven to ill and aged Bhikkus
“Seela suwa arana”, an initiative of Galigamuwe Gnanadeepa Thero, is a health care monastery designed for Buddhist monks where they are able to receive treatments for ailments at their peace.
The centre which is yet to be completed already consist of a three-storied building with an Ayurvedic treatment centre along with facilities for 45 monks to be housed and receive treatment.
Within the unit is a Western medical unit consisting of, medical rooms, pharmacy, physiotherapy rooms/unit and many other facilities for ill priests.
The Health care centre where almost 35 priests are been housed and treated for various illnesses also has state of the art paramedic ambulances donated by devotees. Meanwhile, equipment and medical facilities are provided and donated by devotees of the Thero.
Health meals for the priests at the centre are prepared under the instructions of doctors and dietitians. There are over 40 employees at the centre who caretakers for the priests are while they also undertake other work at the centre day and night.
Apart from the voluntary doctors that serve at the centre, there are also specialist doctors who visit the centre to treat ill priests at Seel Suwa Arana.
It is worthy to mention that all expenses of medicine, medical reports, surgery expenses and even funeral expenses are born by Galigamuwe Gnanadeepa Thero himself.
Apart from physical care, the centre also hosts meditation programs, Dhamma sermons and other religious programs for the ill priests to take part in in which provides mental relief as well.
Since the inception of Seela Suwa arana 6 years ago, over 100 priests have left the centre after successful treatments to their ailments, and sadly around 35 priests have deceased due to terminal illnesses such as cancer.
The center, initiated under a concept of Galigamuwe Gnanadeepa Thero, is a haven to gather merits in conducting good causes such as providing for ill, aged and helpless priests in Sri Lanka and definitely leads the way to attainment of Nibbana.
